PFI Freediver (Level 1)

This program teaches the fundamental techniques utilized in Freediving. You will learn the skills needed to comfortably freedive to depths of up to 20m/66ft. You will learn to increase your breath holding ability and develop better in water comfort through the practice of Static and Dynamic Apnea techniques.

Your PFI Freediver course will cover fundamental topics such as:

  • Essential safety procedures for breath-holding at Freediver Level
  • Proper breathing techniques for freediving and snorkeling
  • Confined water skill development
  • Open water skill development
  • Equalization for depth diving (Frenzel)
  • Equipment for freediving and snorkeling
  • The fundamental physics and physiology of freediving

Format/Duration

The PFI Freediver course includes, at a minimum:

  • E-Learning programs to be completed before Class.

Including Ted Harty’s “Roadmap to Frenzel” course, a $49 value!

  • 1-2 Classroom sessions totaling approximately 6-8 hours
  • 1-2 Confined water (pool) sessions totalling approximately 4-5 hours  
  • 2 Open Water Sessions totalling approximately 4-6 hours 

Skills

Some of the skills a student will be able to perform at the end of the PFI Freediver course are:

  • Safe buddy protocols, including the ability to perform an in-water rescue. 
  • Perform a minimum 1:30 static breathhold in the pool with opportunity to increase to maximum capacity
  • Dive with proper technique to a minimum of 10m/33ft constant weight and free immersion with proper recovery breathing.

Note: Those unable to perform the required skills for a “Freediver” level certification by the end of the course may still receive a “Basic Freediver” or  “Pool only” level certification, with the opportunity to improve their skills to the required level in later training sessions. 


Prerequisites

  • Swimming or snorkeling experience
  • Good health and fitness
  • 16 years of age (students under 18 are required to have the permission of a legal Parent or Guardian) 

Note: For ages under 16 years old ask about our junior freediver course. 

Required Equipment:

  • Mask, snorkel, fins
  • Appropriate exposure protection (5mm wetsuit, gloves and socks when applicable)
  • Weight system
  • Timing device or freedive computer
